ABOUT

AIR was founded by Neal and Vanessa, who have both been practicing yoga and meditation for over 10 years. Their experience includes running a yoga studio and various retreats in Asia and Europe before coming to South Africa. Vanessa comes from a visual arts background and has been working commercially as a graphic designer. Neal's expression is through music and sound. The space combines yoga and meditation with an expression of their creativity.

AIR's mission is to create a thriving space to support the creative process through conscious physical and mental exploration. Yoga, meditation, inspirational talks and workshops are aimed at giving people a place to regroup, focus and inspire. It's a place where people can not only connect with their own inner potential, but also make supportive connections to help build cohesion within the local community of the Woodstock Exchange and beyond.

YOGA

Our take on it is 'Yoga As Life'. Going beyond simple stretching. We practice to clean the pipes of the body and mind allowing us to take control of the way we feel and behave. Through direct experience on the mat we practice to take a balance into our daily lives.

MEDITATION

A creative outlet is essential to a balanced life. Meditation will provide insight into your passions and give you tools to remain calm and focused in the process.

ATELIER

The space also functions as a creative project space. Neal and Vanessa applying their creative skills on various projects. More to come in this area.

STYLES

MYSORE ASHTANGA

Mysore style is traditional Ashtanga yoga, as taught in India by the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois. It is a unique class where you will practice a set sequence of postures at your own pace while a teacher gives you individual guidance and adjustments. As you progress through the series you will receive new postures. It is a wonderful way to learn a personal yoga practice.

ASHTANGA COUNTED

This class is traditionally practised once a week in conjunction with a Mysore practice. It is not suitable for complete beginners. The primary series Ashtanga Vinyasa (Yoga Chikitsa) sequence is a dynamic flow taught in synchronisation with breath and traditional Sanskrit count. You are led through the primary series one posture at a time.

ASHTANGA

Ashtanga is a breathing, flowing, moving meditation that aims to build heat in the body to release toxins. The primary series postures are taught in led class format. This is a perfect class to explore the fundamentals or if you want to learn the beginning sequence as a springboard into Mysore style.

BEGINNER ASHTANGA

Beginner Ashtanga morning sessions will give you an introduction to Ashtanga Yoga and slowly ease you into the traditional Ashtanga practice. It's a fantastic way to build strength, flexibility and stamina. Begin in a safe space and learn the basics. This style is particularly suited to anyone who is committed, regardless of physical ability.

ROCKIT VINYASA

Rockit (or Rocket), is a combination of Ashtanga primary and intermediate series, developed by Larry Schultz in San Francisco in the 80's. It's designed to open up the body in a fast and safe way. Rockit places special emphasis on arm balances, inversions backbends and core strength. This develops lightness and ease in your practice. It's fun and can be as challenging as you want it to be.

JIVAMUKTI

Jivamukti means "liberation while living." This modern style of yoga emerged in 1984 from one of New York City's best-known yoga studios. It is a study of how Ashtanga yoga incorporates into spiritual teachings and philosophies, placing special emphasis on how these apply to daily life. Classes can give you a good workout in a supportive and uplifting environment.

FUNDAMENTALS COURSE (18 MAY - 8 JUNE)

This course is great for those new to yoga who want to explore fundamentals of Yoga asana practice. Each week there'll be different themes - standing poses, seated poses, arm balances, backbends, and breathing exercises. A great space to start off your yoga practice or refine poses with focused detail on alignment and adjustments. A wide selection of exercises for beginners and experienced students.

YIN YOGA

Combining the Yin and the Yang, the passive and active. This class draws on knowledge from Indian Hatha asana, Chinese medicine and Buddhist practices to work on balancing the body. In this class we'll explore both aspects, flowing into movement and holding poses passively. Encouraging surrender, softening and release. Yin yoga compliments a fast and energetic Ashtanga yoga practice.

TIMEOUT MEDITATION

Need a moment? We hold a quiet 20 minute space to help bring us into focus again. Using a variety of simple meditation techniques this is a time to reel in the mind from the distractions of the day and re-centre. Gain qualities of focus, calmness, clarity, and insight for your creative processes.

ACROYOGA

Working as a team, we'll cultivate trust, strength, stability and flexibility through partner asana, and partner strength and inversion drills. Then we'll take it to the air with an acrobatic flying sequence. A playful, safe, supportive environment will empower the whole room to be upside down and connect to their joy! No partner necessary. No experience necessary.

TREATMENTS

Massage is the perfect compliment to your yoga practice. It can be used therapeutically to pinpoint specific blockages in the body, or an opportunity to relax and let go. Amy De Klerk has a depth of knowledge based in Thai and traditional massage systems. Thai Massage can be combined with one-on-one yoga therapy session to help you develop your own therapeutic approach. Book in advance to arrange a time massage@airatelier.co.za or T +27 (0)84 206 4223.

Thai Traditional Massage

Thai Massage is a dynamic combination of massage, Yoga and acupressure that works harmoniously to balance the body's natural energy systems. Commonly referred to as "Thai Yoga Massage", this unique therapy is one of the key elements of traditional Thai medicine. Originating in India around the time of Buddha (over 2,000 years ago), Thai Massage is rooted in Indian traditions of Yoga and in Buddhist
spiritual practices. (60/90mins)

Thai Foot Massage & Leg Meridian Clearing

A powerful cleansing and detoxifying treatment, this works on the 'Sen' (Thai meridians) lines of the leg and feet yet has an effect on one's whole being. Ancient beliefs support the theory that our entire body is mapped out in our feet, by applying pressure and gentle massage techniques to these points we bring the energy systems back into harmony. (90mins)

Thai Foot Massage

The treatment draws on acupressure, stretching and energy balancing techniques using hands, thumb pressure and a wooden acupressure tool known as a Thai foot stick. As well as being a wonderfully relaxing treatment, Thai foot massage can improve the circulation, help boost the immune system, reduce stiffness and improve flexibility. (60mins)

Note: Cancellations must be made at least 24hrs in advance.
Late cancellations will be charged for at 50% of the treatment price.

Aromatherapy Oil Massage

Aromatherapy utilizes the powerful healing properties of essential oils to bring about a deep sense of calm and relaxation. It is believed that, in this state, the body is able to heal itself. The light, rhythmical strokes sooth the body, while the effects of the oils de-stress and uplift the mind. This subtle treatment is perfect for someone who just needs a time out from the world. (60/90mins)

Holistic Sports/Myofascial Massage

This unique treatment is formulated according to each person's current state of being. Many people have muscular imbalances and rotations as a result of lifestyle habits; these progress into postural abnormalities, injuries, and chronic pain. Working with Aromatherapy oils, trigger point therapy and myofascial release; chronic tension, pain and muscle tightness is relieved and a greater sense of body awareness is restored. Be free to move! (60/90mins)

Reflexology

This therapy is based on the discovery that there are points on the feet that correspond to organs, systems and structures within the entire body. By using specific pressure techniques to stimulate the "reflexes" on the feet, imbalances in the body can be both detected and effectively treated to restore balance and well-being. (60mins)
